A word on income projection

An important thing to remember is that while you must make future projections to forecast income, you should never go too far into the future in doing so.

While you can probably predict tomorrow's income with a pretty reasonable degree of accuracy, the further away you go from the present, your accuracy will decline exponentially. What any particular website will be making a year from now is entirely out of your ability to forsee, even if you never touch the thing ever again.

There are too many variables out of your control, like search engines dropping your site or indexing more pages, sponsorship revenue changes, etc.

Making the most from useless domains

So, you've got a couple of domains laying around that aren't making you any money and you're not sure what to do with.

Well don't let them just sit there eating up your money. At the very least, every domain you have should be paying for itself and a reasonable portion of the server hosting that it sits on.

How do you do that? Slap up an index page and a few pages linking from the index page to a few others.

What goes on it? Look up some articles in relation to the subject of the domain. If the domain is tractortrailerhitches.com, look up some articles on tractor trailer hitches.

Don't worry about using duplicate content hurting your search engine scores, you weren't using the domain in the first place, remember? Be sure to leave the original article in full, including a link to the original article. If you're going to borrow, the least you can do is give the guy a little more linking cred.

Now take whatever key phrase that the article was referencing, and do a search and replace for a little searched obscure keyword that almost no one searches for. There's lots of pages for "Tractor trailer hitches", I'm sure. But how many for "hitches tractor trailer"? All you need is a hit a day per page, and say 10 pages. At a 10% CTR at adsense, that would be 1 click per day. At even 2 cents per click, that's $7. Enough so that the domain that was just taking up space is now not taking money from your pocket.
